Visiting Camuy River Cave Park with kids requires a little preparation. The 268-acre park offers an educational look at million-year-old geology and Taíno history. While the infrastructure supports family visits, strict safety rules apply to everyone.

Is the Camuy Cave Park family-friendly?

Yes, the main Cueva Clara de Empalme is highly accessible for families.

The park maintains designated concrete walkways and handrails throughout the public cavern route. This infrastructure makes exploring the 700-foot main chamber safe for children. Families just need to ensure everyone stays on the path to protect the fragile ecosystem.

How difficult is the walk for children?

The walk is generally easy, but it can become strenuous if the park trolley is out of service.

When fully operational, a trolley usually assists visitors down to the cave entrance. If the trolley is not running, families must walk down and back up a steep incline. Keep this in mind if visiting with young children who tire easily.

What should children wear to the caves?

All visitors, including children, must wear closed-toe shoes with good tread.

Sandals and flip-flops are strictly prohibited due to wet and slippery cave floors. Dress kids in a light jacket or long-sleeve shirt, as the underground environment is damp and cool. Comfortable, quick-drying pants are better than shorts.

Are there restrooms inside the caves?

No, there are no restrooms located inside the underground caverns.

Families should use the restrooms at the Visitor Center before beginning the descent. The main cavern tour takes about 45 minutes inside, plus the time required to walk or ride down to the entrance.

What safety rules apply to kids in the caves?

Children must stay on paths and avoid touching the rock formations.

Touching stalactites and stalagmites is prohibited to protect the 45-million-year-old geology. You must follow all instructions from the tour guides. Flash photography is usually allowed, but avoid flashing lights directly at the bats living in the cave.
